At home, Metaxa was sitting at the window, her little face still anxious.

“It’s not good news is it, Zvoni?”

“We haven’t found him.”

“And?”

“We will keep looking.”

“There is more, I know there is.”

Zvonek sighed. Metaxa wasn’t stupid. She was actually a little too bright.

“Well, I can’t go into it now, but there seem to be quite a few cats missing, and it all seems to be linked. I’m leading a search team tonight through the tunnels, which is where we think Koule and the others are.”

“The tunnels!” Metaxa looked even more nervous. “Why? Who would take a kitten to the tunnels?”

“Someone really awful. But don’t worry, we will find him.”

“We?” Metaxa didn’t miss anything.

“Honza and a team from FI are joining me tonight. We are going to search for them, and we won’t stop until we find them.”

“Who took them and why?” She wasn’t going to give up.

“An old enemy of FI. The cat they wanted was in the park at the same time as Koule. When they captured her, he got in the way.”

“His mother will be heartbroken. I have to go there now.”

Zvonek put out a restraining paw. “Honza has gone to tell her. I need you to stay here.” He wasn’t going to take a chance the rats might still be collecting cats and have Metaxa go missing as well. He did not want to imagine the consequences if that happened. Clawdette had entrusted her to his care.

“But I told her…”

“Honza will sort it out. We will find him, Metaxa, I promise.” Zvonek sounded more confident that he felt. The rats were unpredictable at the best of times. He hoped all the missing cats were still alive.

“I need you here. We will be in touch with each other on the MC. As soon as I have found him, I’ll need you to tell his mother.”

She managed a weak smile.

Fred, Honza and Zvonek spent most of the afternoon familiarizing themselves with the structure and layout of the tunnels, which formed an underground maze of passageways. The most recent intel suggested an area under the Old Town Square, in Prague 1.

Metaxa watched from her place on the green chair. Zvonek glanced over at her every so often. She looked really worried and his heart went out to her, but they were doing the best they could.

Koule’s mother had been just as worried and upset, or more, at the prospect of her little kit somewhere under Prague. Vladimir had received another note, even more threatening than the first, giving him a time to release Rodent. All of them felt the pressure increase.

They separated just before Mom came home, and arranged to meet back in the garden just after 11 p.m. Mom went to bed as regular as clockwork, the same time every night, so at least that wouldn’t pose a problem. There wasn’t much they could do before the metro closed for the night anyway.

Zvonek pretended to be really sleepy for most of the evening. Mom had playtime with Metaxa, which was good as it kept her occupied.
